Few trades offer the kind of long-term security that plumbing does. It pays well, demand stays strong, and there’s a clear path toward advancement, including the chance to run your own business someday. In Connecticut, though, you can’t work as a plumber until you’ve earned a license through the Department of Consumer Protection.
Here at Exam Insiders, we’ve been helping adult learners prepare for and pass their licensing exams since 2023. Below, we break down the two unlimited plumbing licenses Connecticut offers, what each one requires, and what you’ll face on exam day.
The Two Unlimited Plumbing Licenses in Connecticut
Connecticut’s licensing structure gives plumbers two main steps up the career ladder: the P-2 unlimited journeyperson plumber license and the P-1 unlimited plumbing contractor license.
P-2: Unlimited Journeyperson Plumber
A P-2 license authorizes you to install, inspect, maintain, repair, replace, and alter plumbing and piping for gas, water, sewage, and fire prevention systems, along with other approved work described in section 20-330 of the Connecticut General Statutes.
The key limitation is supervision: as a P-2 holder, you must work under a licensed plumbing contractor.
To qualify, you need to be at least 18 years old and complete 8,000 hours (roughly four years) of on-the-job training or approved education. You’ll also need to register with the Connecticut Department of Labor so your apprenticeship or other qualifying hours are properly tracked.
Once those hours are done, the final steps are submitting an application, paying the required fees, and passing the state exams.
P-1: Unlimited Plumbing Contractor
The P-1 license covers the same scope of work as the P-2, but you can perform it without supervision. It also opens the door to owning a plumbing business, bidding on jobs, pulling permits, and supervising journeyperson plumbers and apprentices.
To earn it, you must log two years of experience as a journeyperson plumber and pass the required state exams.
Inside the Connecticut Plumbing Exams
Whichever license you pursue, you’ll need to pass a trade exam. The P-2 Unlimited Journeyperson Plumber Exam includes 70 questions drawn from the following subject areas:
- General plumbing regulations
- Gas systems
- Cleanouts
- Piping, valves, and controls
- Fixtures and equipment
- Water supply
- Water heaters
- Drain, waste, and vent
- Hangers and supports
- Traps and interceptors
- Backflow
- Isometric analysis
- Developed length
- Safety and excavation
- Joints and connections
- Water treatment
Candidates get 2.5 hours to finish the P-2 exam.
The P-1 Unlimited Plumbing Contractor Exam tests the same topics, but it contains 80 questions and allows three hours.
In addition to the trade exam, applicants for either license must pass the Business Law Exam. This 50-question test covers:
- Licensing
- Lien law
- Financial management
- Estimating and bidding
- Labor laws
- Tax laws
- Contracts
- Project management
- Risk management
- Business organization
- Environmental and safety
You’ll have two hours for the business law test. Every exam is open-book, and a passing score requires at least 70% of questions answered correctly.
