Experience alone won’t get you onto every commercial remodeling job in Nevada. For certain projects, the state requires a B-6 commercial remodeling license. If you want to grow the range of work you can legally bid on, the smartest first step is learning what the license requires and how the exams work. Here at Exam Insiders, we’ve broken it all down for you.
What the B-6 License Allows You to Do
A B-6 license authorizes a broad mix of interior remodeling and improvement work. You’ll need it for many property types, such as offices, commercial spaces, and some buildings taller than three stories.
That said, the classification has limits. It does not certify you to install structural members, mechanical systems, or fire protection systems. Before submitting any bid, review the scope of work closely to confirm it stays within what your license permits.
How Much Experience You Need
Nevada requires contractors to show qualifying experience before they can apply. As a general rule, that means a minimum of four years working as a journeyman or contractor at some point within the last 15 years.
Approved education and training may be credited toward part of that requirement, though it usually can’t replace all of it. To keep the review moving smoothly, pull together your employment records and any training certificates before you apply.
Getting Ready for the B-6 Exams
Two exams stand between you and your B-6 license: the B-6 Commercial Remodeling Contractor Exam and the Contractor Management Survey (CMS) Exam. Together, they assess your construction know-how along with your understanding of licensing, contracts, estimating, project management, and labor rules.
The B-6 trade exam is open book, with 80 questions and a three-hour time limit. Passing requires 56 correct answers. Topics on the exam include:
- Masonry
- Drywall
- Concrete
- Metals
- Doors
- Windows
- Finishing
- Plan reading
Solid preparation makes all the difference. Since the test is open book, get comfortable navigating the approved references so you can find answers quickly on exam day. Be sure to confirm the current approved reference list with the Nevada State Contractors Board before you sit for the exam.
The Application and Bonding Process
Start by filling out an application and sending it to the Nevada State Contractors Board. It will ask for a range of details covering your business, experience, finances, and background. After the board verifies that you’re eligible, you can schedule your exams. Pay close attention to all instructions and deadlines along the way.
The board will also assign you a contractor bond, with the amount based on factors such as your financial standing and experience. Bond amounts run from $1,000 to $500,000. Depending on your situation, you may also need to provide workers’ compensation documentation and other records before your license is issued.
Once issued, the license is valid for two years. Keep track of your renewal date so your license never lapses.
Setting Yourself Up for Success
Earning your Nevada B-6 commercial remodeling license positions you to take on qualifying renovation work and proves to clients and employers that you have the skills to deliver.
The key is going in prepared: understand the license scope, document your experience thoroughly, and practice with the approved references until you can use them with confidence. With a clear plan, you’ll be well on your way to passing your exams and getting licensed.
