Teaching cosmetology or nail technology in Illinois means holding a license that the state treats separately from a standard practitioner license. Because of that distinction, instructors have their own continuing education (CE) obligations to meet before they can keep their teaching license active.
We’ve been helping adult learners prepare for exams and stay licensed since 2023, and we know how stressful a looming expiration date can be. Below, we break down what Illinois cosmetology and nail tech instructors need to know about CE hours, deadlines, approved subjects, and first-time renewal rules.
How Many CE Hours Illinois Instructors Need
Cosmetology teachers must complete 14 hours of CE in approved subject areas, while nail tech teachers need 10 hours. For both license types, one of those hours has to cover sexual harassment prevention training.
On top of that, every instructor must finish 10 more hours focused specifically on teaching. Put together, cosmetology teachers need 24 total CE hours and nail tech teachers need 20 total CE hours per renewal.
| License | Approved Subject Hours (incl. 1 hr sexual harassment prevention) | Teaching-Specific Hours | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cosmetology Teacher | 14 | 10 | 24 |
| Nail Tech Teacher | 10 | 10 | 20 |
Renewal Deadlines
Illinois teaching licenses renew every two years. Cosmetology teacher licenses expire on September 30 of each even-numbered year, and nail tech teacher licenses expire on October 31 of each even-numbered year.
A smart habit is to send in your renewal application at least 30 days before your expiration date. It can also help to include the certificates of attendance or completion for each course you finished.
Approved CE Topics for Instructors
Illinois expects instructors to show strength in two areas: the beauty profession itself and the craft of teaching. Here’s how the subject requirements are divided.
Profession-Specific Subjects
Courses that count toward the nail and cosmetology portion of your CE include:
- Advanced product chemistry and chemical interaction
- Use of machines and implements
- Sanitary procedures
- Hazardous chemicals
- Exposure minimization
- Updated use of implements
- Advanced anatomy of the skin, scalp, hair, and/or nails
- Human relations and communication skills
- Management and marketing
Cosmetology teachers need 13 hours from these topics, and nail tech teachers need nine. The one-hour sexual harassment prevention requirement is added on top of those hours to reach 14 and 10, respectively.
Teaching-Focused Subjects
Every licensed cosmetology and nail tech teacher must also complete 10 CE hours in subjects such as:
- Teaching methodology
- Educational psychology
- Classroom management
- Other teaching-related courses
These hours are separate from your profession-specific requirements. In fact, this teaching-focused coursework is exactly what distinguishes an instructor license from a regular cosmetology or nail technology license.
Special Rules for First-Time Renewals
If this is your first renewal, one hour of your CE must cover domestic violence and sexual assault awareness.
Illinois law exempts first-time renewers from profession-specific continuing education. That means if you’re renewing for the first time since earning your license, the only requirement you need to complete is the one-hour domestic violence and sexual assault awareness course.
Staying on Track
Keeping your Illinois teaching license current comes down to knowing your total hours, choosing courses from the approved subject lists, and filing well ahead of your September 30 or October 31 deadline. Plan your coursework early, save your completion certificates, and you’ll head into renewal season with confidence.
